About the Artist

My Statement

It’s been an awfully long time since I ran off to art school in 1968. I was 23 years old and extremely idealistic. So much has happened to me in the world since then. Much of it seemed to be a trial to see if I could, or would, persist. The main focus for the present is that I enjoy what I am doing, and that is enough.

I fire my work in reduction with glazes that I’ve worked out over the years – all made to work together and interact with the surface of the clay. I’ve tried porcelain and even earthenware, but always return to the rich colors of reduction and stoneware – I love iron spots – I enjoy throwing – I love color! – I respect the rigors and demands of reduction firing and most of all, the feeling of Christmas morning when I open the kiln to a successful firing.

Lately I’ve had some problems dealing with the world. Post-modernism seems to be inflicted on me. Arrogance, pomposity, and the hatreds of religion are all hammering on my head. It seems that we as a people are all at war with each other – the left and the right hating each other, religions at odds with each other, and civilization seeming to dissolve. Art is civilization. It is a reflection of the culture surrounding it. It cannot exist by itself. There is only one absolute. We must have peace if we are to continue.
